Following his victory in the 2024 general elections, President-elect John Dramani Mahama has received strong endorsements from senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who have assured Ghanaians of a leadership rooted in humility, integrity, and accountability.
Speaking after the election results, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, expressed hope that Mr Mahama will meet the high expectations of the Ghanaian people. He promised that the Mahama-led government would avoid the “impunity and arrogance of power” that, in his view, characterized the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
“We owe Ghanaians a depth of gratitude for standing strong and firm behind His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and having faith and confidence in his return to the presidency. It is my trust and prayer that he will not disappoint Ghanaians,” Mr Iddrisu said.
“At least he will avoid the arrogance of the NPP, so be sure that President Mahama will run a government with ministers who will be humble and uphold humility as a hallmark. President Mahama will also avoid the abuse of office with impunity. The emergence of John Mahama marks an end to impunity.”
A Leadership That Listens
Outgoing Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson also emphasized the incoming administration’s commitment to good governance and respect for the rule of law. In a post on social media platform X, he celebrated the NDC’s electoral success, describing the outcome as a “powerful statement” from the Ghanaian people.
“Together, we’ve achieved the incredible—transforming the NPP into a micro minority by claiming over 50 seats. But this victory isn’t ours alone; it’s a powerful statement from the true masters of our democracy—the resilient people of Ghana,” Dr Forson wrote.
He assured that the new government will prioritize the concerns of Ghanaians. “We hear you, and we will not betray your trust. Unlike the NPP, we will uphold governance rooted in integrity, probity, and accountability. No to greed, impunity, and disrespect for the rule of law—yes to leadership that listens and delivers for the people! Let’s keep building a brighter Ghana, together,” he added.
Cautious Optimism
Despite the celebratory mood among NDC supporters, President-elect John Mahama has urged caution and moderation. Addressing members of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Mr Mahama reminded his supporters that Ghanaians will judge the NDC administration with the same yardstick they applied to the NPP government.
“We should not be too happy about the defeat of the NPP because Ghanaians are measuring with the same yardstick. Ghanaians have always held the NDC to a higher standard because we are a social democracy, and they are a property-owning democracy,” he noted.
This statement highlights Mr Mahama’s awareness of the high expectations placed on his leadership and his intent to ensure his government remains focused on delivering results.
Divine Guidance Amidst High Expectations
Echoing similar sentiments, Ningo-Prampram MP Samuel Nartey George stressed the enormous responsibility on President-elect Mahama’s shoulders. He urged the NDC leadership to remain humble and seek divine guidance to steer the nation forward.
“The expectations Ghanaians have placed on us are immense,” Mr George said during an appearance on TV3’s Key Points. “President Mahama, along with all his appointees and those of us in government, must understand that we hold power in trust for the Ghanaian people. Ultimate power belongs to the people of Ghana.”
He further emphasized the need for prayers and counsel, given the challenges ahead. “Only God can guide him to lead this country right, given the colossal mess and the gargantuan damage we are inheriting.”
Looking Ahead
The assurances from NDC leaders signal a commitment to rebuild public trust and deliver on promises made during the election campaign. With high expectations from a population eager for change, the incoming Mahama administration faces the task of addressing economic challenges, fostering good governance, and meeting the aspirations of the Ghanaian people.
As the NDC prepares to take over governance, all eyes will be on how President-elect John Mahama delivers on his mandate while navigating the weight of public expectations.
