GRA Cannot Refund Wrongful E-levy Deductions – Mahama Ayariga

Mahama Ayariga, a member of the three Members of Parliament who filed a suit at the Supreme Court challenging the implementation of the controversial electronic levy (E- Levy), has casted doubts over the Ghana Revenue Authority’s abilty to refund wrongfully deducted charges.

Manay Ghanaians since the implementation of the E-levy have complained of wrongful deductions including transactions less than the GHS100 threshold.

Following the suit, the Supreme Court ordered the GRA to make sure it keep accurate records of monies taken and refund them accordingly should there be a case of wrongful deductions.

Speaking to Joy News, Mr Ayariga expressed doubts on the abilities of the GRA to make those refunds.

“I don’t think that is practical if several millions of Ghanaians through several millions of transactions get their money deducted; that the GRA has the infrastructural capacity, the technology to be able to reverse and refund the monies” As we speak, because of the technological challenges in implementing this E – levy, they are staggering it. so that is an admission of the technological challenges in implementing this legislation. Mr. Ayariga said.

“So I do not know how it is going to be easy to reverse the transactions several weeks or months after the monies have been collected”, he intimated.
