GPRTU Debunks 30% Fare Increment

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has debunked claims of a 30% increment on transport fares.

According to the Union, they are yet to conclude talks on a possible upward adjustment with government.

GPRTU’s call to the public to disregard the supposed increment in transport fares comes after reports that effective Wednesday, September 21, 2022, commercial transport users would pay 30% more on fares.

Some transport unions on Wednesday declared that “in consultation with our mother body the GPRTU OF TUC, we wish to announce to the general public that there will be a 30% increment on fares starting Tuesday 21st September 2022.”

The announcement was contained in a statement from the Concerned Drivers Association and True Drivers Union.

The communique also referenced that increment in fuel products, spare parts, and the poor economic management has dwindled the revenues of players in the transport industry.

“Electricity tariffs, water tariffs, Prices of spare parts, prices of food and Pure water prices have all increased, hence we have no option than to also increase our fares,” the statement added.

But the General Secretary of GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, told Citi News that “our position is that, fuel prices have gone up, which must be equated to fare increment. But that is not the only component we consider when adjusting prices.”

“A committee has been set up to do the fact-finding for the report to be submitted to the Minister so we agree. But settling on a particular margin and timeline now will be creating fear and panic”
