Government Set To Roll Out Programme To Assist Ghanaians In Paying Rent By December 2022

Government is set to deliver on a major campaign promise as it initiates plans to roll out the National Rent Assistance Scheme (NRAS) before December 2022.

It will be recalled that in the run up to the 2020 election, the New Patriotic Party promised to assist Ghanaians in the payment of their rent to serve as a means to address the challenges citizens go through in securing suitable accommodation.

Two years into the second term of President Akufo-Addo, the promise is yet to materialize and many have wondered if the programme will indeed materialize at all.

However, in an interview with Yen.com.gh, Emmanuel Hovey Kporsu, the Public Relations Officer of the Rent Control Department of Ghana has indicated that plans have been far advanced to roll out the policy by December 2022.

The National Rent Assistance Scheme is a Ghc 100 million public-private partnership to address rent issues once and for all and help young people access loans to enable them rent properties without too much stress.

Eligible Ghanaians can apply for loans from the NRAS when they’re planning to rent an apartment.

Qualified candidates would have their rent advance paid out by the Scheme to their landlords and a monthly deduction taken from their salaries.

“The system will be in place to help people who can be guaranteed that every month a deduction can be made from their salaries,” he said.
