Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana, has concluded his extensive nationwide campaign, making a compelling call to delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to entrust him with the responsibility of defeating former President John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming 2024 presidential elections. Bawumia’s rallying cry was delivered during a vibrant gathering in Bolgatanga, which marked the culmination of months of tireless campaigning leading up to the NPP’s flagbearer contest.
In his address to the enthusiastic crowd, Vice President Bawumia exuded confidence, asserting that defeating Mahama in the 2024 polls would be a straightforward task with him as the standard-bearer of the NPP. He emphasized his unique qualifications by highlighting his experience as the running mate to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the presidential elections of 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.
Bawumia underlined his unmatched familiarity with the Ghanaian political landscape, having traversed every constituency, and even sleeping in numerous of them during previous campaigns. He expressed, “As the saying goes, ‘follow who knows the road.’ I know the road, and not only do I know the road, I have the winning experience.” This winning experience, he assured, would be instrumental in securing victory for the NPP in 2024.
The Vice President further reminded the audience that he and Nana Akufo-Addo had previously secured two presidential election victories, notably in 2016 and 2020. He pointed out that breaking the eight-year cycle required a candidate who possessed the knowledge and experience necessary to win elections. He pledged to bring his winning expertise to the forefront should he be elected as the NPP’s flagbearer on November 4, 2023.
Regarding John Mahama’s candidacy as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia confidently stated, “When they brought him in 2016, didn’t we beat him? Then they brought him back in 2020, and didn’t we beat him again? So if they are bringing him in 2024, who do you think can beat John Mahama in 2024? It is me…we beat him in 2016, we beat him in 2020, and I will beat him in 2024. On November 4, I am just asking you to give John Mahama to me so that I can beat him for you.”
The NPP is set to hold its presidential candidate selection on November 4, 2023, with over 200,000 delegates expected to cast their votes. As the polls and predictions have consistently favored Dr. Bawumia, his call to action has invigorated the party’s supporters and intensified the anticipation surrounding the forthcoming decision.
