The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is urging Ghanaian women to go to the right facilities to terminate unwanted pregnancies.
Speaking to the media at a capacity building on accurate coverage of the abortion law, Dr Chris Opoku Fofie, Head of safe motherhood programme at the GHS said efforts are being made to put a stop to abortion related deaths.
He said there’s discussion ongoing for a possible absorption of abortion fees on the National Health Insurance Scheme so women can walk into any recognized health facility with their cards to get safe abortion.
Dr Fofie explained that some pregnancies are not intended and it’ll be unfair to have women bring forth babies they don’t intend to keep.
Fati Caroline Asigri, Regional focal person for comprehensive abortion at the Ghana Health Service also advised teenagers to seek knowledge on family planning.
She said they can walk into any recognized health facility to seek advise instead of relying on hearsay.
She noted that although abstinence is the best, it’s not always possible. And in the worst case that there’s pregnancy, report to a health facility, you’ll be tested and counseled before abortion is even done for you.
