Ghana Does Not Need An Inconsistent Leader Like Mahama – Dr. Bawumia

In a recent address, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, highlighted what he described as a pattern of inconsistency in former President John Dramani Mahama’s policy positions, suggesting it indicates a lack of trustworthiness.

Dr. Bawumia pointed to Mr. Mahama’s past stance on Free Senior High School (SHS) to illustrate his argument. “My opponent, the former President, has shown, to put it mildly, significant inconsistency. He initially criticized Free SHS, claiming it was impractical and would harm the economy. However, today he claims credit for introducing it,” Dr. Bawumia remarked.

He went on to discuss the teacher licensure exams, introduced under Mahama’s administration but now criticized by the former President. “When he was in office, he implemented the licensure exams for teachers. Now, he opposes it. This flip-flopping raises questions about his commitment to policies,” Dr. Bawumia asserted.

Additionally, he brought up Mahama’s previous position on training allowances for teachers and nurses, which Mahama’s administration abolished, stating he would stand by this decision even if it cost him politically. However, Mahama now promises to sustain these allowances if elected. “It’s purely political,” Dr. Bawumia suggested, “and not a genuine commitment.”

Dr. Bawumia also addressed Mahama’s focus on infrastructure as a major achievement, a claim he has recently downplayed. “While he once highlighted infrastructure as crucial, he now argues that infrastructure doesn’t impact the economy. For a former president to separate the economy from infrastructure raises serious concerns,” Bawumia contended. “Perhaps this approach explains why the economy struggled under his leadership.”
