In a decisive operation, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has seized a large cache of firearms and ammunition at the Tema Port, a move that highlights the authority’s dedication to combating arms smuggling and safeguarding national security.
Rising Concerns Over Illicit Arms
The seizure comes against the backdrop of increasing armed robberies and violent crimes across Ghana. This worrying trend has heightened concerns about the proliferation of illegal firearms and their impact on the nation’s stability.
Details of the Interception
On Monday, November 4, customs officials at the Golden Jubilee Terminal made a significant discovery during a routine inspection. Concealed in three suitcases within a 40-foot container—declared to contain vehicles and personal effects—were:
- 53 pistols (side arms)
- 65 rounds of live ammunition
- 74 magazines
- A PC holster
The shipment, imported from the United States under the container number MEDU4496951, had been flagged for closer examination due to suspicious documentation.
Investigations and Arrests
Following the discovery, the Customs examination team promptly informed the GRA’s Intelligence and Investigations Unit and the Preventive Unit. This collaborative effort led to the arrest of the shipping agent and a representative of the consignee. The suspects have since been handed over to the Marine and Railway Police Station in Tema for further investigation.
GRA’s Commitment to Security
Brigadier Zibrim Ayorrogo, Commissioner of Customs, commended the officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and professionalism.
“This seizure demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting Ghana’s security and stability. Arms smuggling poses a grave threat, and we will continue to work tirelessly to prevent such illicit activities,” he asserted.
Broader Implications
The successful operation underscores the critical role of the Customs Division in intercepting illegal arms shipments that could fuel crime and destabilize communities. As investigations continue, the GRA’s proactive stance serves as a deterrent to smugglers and reinforces the importance of securing Ghana’s borders.
This latest seizure is a testament to the GRA’s resolve to safeguard the nation from the growing menace of illegal arms and ammunition.
