Abraham Amaliba, member of the National Democratic Congress'(NDC’s) Legal team is accusing the National Identification Authority(NIA) of deliberately making it difficult for members of the NDC to acquire a Ghana card.
Speaking on Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio he said areas earmarked as strongholds of the NDC are facing challenges not found in other areas.
According to Amaliba, the party has had to attach a Lawyer to every constituency in order to get its members to be registered for the Ghana Card without any form of challenges.
“I have indicated that the NIA has also decided that, in our strong areas they slow down the process of issuing the cards. And I have examples of that. There is a guy who lives in Kumasi, [and] once your name is a Northern name they frustrate you. When you want to register, they raise objections and these objections can take you a long time.
I didn’t register in Kumasi but this is someone who called me to tell me and gave me that situation he found himself in. He proceeded to Bongo so I have to call the NDC Chairman or was it the secretary, one of them, to assist him to register and he registered and came back to Kumasi.”
These allegations comes at a time when the Electoral Commission has indicated plans to make the Ghana Card the only form of identification for persons who will want to register for a voter’s ID card.
