From Opoku Onyinah To Rita Akosua Dickson; Kevin Taylor’s Embarassing Political ‘Cantata’ And The NDC’s Curious Patronage (Editorial)

Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, Vice Chancellor of KNUST

In the latest episode of the never-ending political circus of Kevin Taylor, the US-based political mercenary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), we are treated to another round of his fanciful allegations. This time, the spotlight falls on the Vice Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Rita Akosua Dickson. Taylor, with his characteristic flair for drama and baseless speculation, claims that Professor Dickson is set to be named as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 elections, barring any last-minute changes.

One might expect that Taylor, who seems to have an unhealthy obsession with the affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), would be more interested in promoting the NDC’s policies—particularly their dead-on-arrival 24-hour economy promise. However, in a predictable twist, Taylor has chosen instead to focus his attention on sowing discord within the ranks of the NPP, a party he and his paymasters fervently believe is destined for opposition, by hook or by crook.

It is worth recalling that this is not the first time Taylor has engaged in such antics. Only recently, he directed his venomous commentary towards the venerable Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, alleging that the respected man of God was to be named as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate. Now, his attention has shifted to the dignified Professor Dickson, presumably aiming to subject her to a similar barrage of insults and unwarranted criticism.

One cannot help but wonder: if the NPP is indeed in the process of selecting a running mate, is Kevin Taylor the chosen vessel for disseminating such information? Ghanafeed can state with authority that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has not yet presented any name to the National Council of the NPP for consideration as a running mate. It seems rather ludicrous that Taylor, with his dubious credibility, would be privy to such sensitive internal deliberations.

Taylor and his ilk should perhaps refocus their efforts on their own camp. The NDC’s much-touted 24-hour economy policy remains an enigma, even to their staunchest defenders. Instead of peddling unfounded rumors and stirring unnecessary controversy, Taylor might do well to articulate how his employers intend to deliver on their economic promises—a task that, judging by their silence, seems to be an uphill battle.

The political landscape in Ghana is challenging enough without the added distraction of Taylor’s incessant mudslinging. It is high time he and his paymasters concentrated on their own policy failures rather than obsessing over the internal affairs of the NPP. After all, a party that is confident in its vision and policies should not need to resort to such desperate measures to gain attention.

In conclusion, Kevin Taylor’s latest allegations should be taken with a generous pinch of salt. The NPP’s process of selecting a running mate is an internal matter, and one that will be communicated through official channels when the time is right. Until then, Taylor and his camp would do well to focus on their own promises and leave the business of the NPP to the NPP. Ghana’s political discourse deserves better than the sideshow Taylor continually attempts to provide.
