Free SHS: Listen To Us And Learn Wisdom – Minority To Gov’t

Ranking Member on the Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe has charged government to give ear to opposing voices in order to better the free senior high program.

According to him, the government’s refusal to listen to contrary views on the implementation of the programme, is what has led to the current debacle with final-year SHS students whose return to school has been postponed to 5 May 2021.

If they are saying that they’ve abolished the double-track system, they should let all the three years go to school at the same time and we will see what will happen”, he said on the Class Morning Show.

“And that’s what they attempted to do and they’ve realised that it cannot work”, he said, adding: “They attempted to do it and it cannot work because all the first-year students are in school; second-years, they are there and you are pushing the third-years”.

“Where are they going to sleep? Where are the classrooms?” he asked, stressing: “So, they didn’t think thoroughly through the programme at this stage”.

“So, I think they need to sit down and plan well”, he suggested.

The government, he said, “must listen to opposing voices and learn any wisdom that is in it and apply it”.

“Until they do that, our education system [will continue to suffer]” he warned.

“Even what is happening at the basic level is worse than what is happening at the secondary level. It is a serious crisis”, he added.
