Flashback: Former President Mahama Finally Breaks His Silence On The ‘Airbus Saga’ – Denies Receiving Any Financial Benefits

Many Ghanaians, especially members of the ruling New Patriotic Party, have sought to get former President John Mahama to respond to allegations of wrongdoing in the infamous Airbus saga.

However, what many might have forgotten is that the former President already broke his silence on the matter almost a month ago when he stated in a conversation with Daily Graphic that he did no wrong and that no financial benefits accrued to him.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has finally reacted to allegations of bribe-taking leveled against him in the much-publicized Airbus saga, denying any form of financial benefit.

Airbus has been under investigation by the US Department of Justice (DOJ), the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) of the UK, and the Parquet National Financier (PNF) of France over bribe payments in the sale of Aircraft to some countries. 

This came to light after nearly four years of investigations by authorities in the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK) and France into the business operations of Airbus, which culminated in the company being fined $3.9 billion for its corrupt practices in Ghana, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Taiwan within the same period.

However, reacting to the issue in an interview with Daily Graphic, the former President denied vehemently any form of wrongdoing in the matter.

“Let me state without any equivocation that no financial benefit accrued to me. Neither was there any form of inducement in the purchase of the aircraft. My singular motivation was to equip and retool the Ghana Armed Forces in a manner that would make the discharge of their national and international roles efficient and less burdensome and for all the sacrifices that our men and women in uniform make, they do not deserve less”. He said.

Meanwhile the matter is still under investigation, as it has been referred to the special prosecutor, Mr. Martin Amidu by the President for thorough investigations.
