Former President John Dramani Mahama has pointed to recent remarks by President Nana Akufo-Addo as indicative of a shift in tone, suggesting that the President may be preparing for a potential handover of power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming election.
In his comments, Mahama highlighted Akufo-Addo’s recent commitment to ensuring a peaceful transition, where the President assured the public that he would transfer power to whichever party emerges victorious in the general election. While this pledge is a routine democratic assurance, Mahama interprets it as an implicit sign that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) could be bracing for defeat.
Expounding on the reasons he believes the NDC is the right choice for voters, Mahama emphasized his commitment to tackling corruption, especially within the current administration. “The reason you must vote for the NDC is that we will go after all who have stolen from the public purse,” he stated. “Dr. Bawumia cannot hold them accountable—that’s why he initially said he wouldn’t hand over power to me.”
However, Mahama noted a recent change in Akufo-Addo’s tone, observing that the President had now pledged to hand over power to the rightful election winner. “He knows the NPP is on the brink of losing this election,” Mahama claimed. “He’s aware that John Dramani Mahama is on his way back to the Jubilee House.”
