The Electoral Commission (EC) has firmly rejected allegations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding purported attempts to influence the outcome of the 2024 General Elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NDC’s criticism followed recent comments by President Akufo-Addo, in which he declared his unwillingness to cede power to an opponent he had previously defeated. The NDC suggested that the EC’s actions could be interpreted as supporting such a stance.
Addressing these concerns, the NDC held a press conference on Thursday, May 16, cautioning the EC against any attempts to rig the forthcoming elections. In a swift rebuttal, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Samuel Tettey, spoke to the media in Accra on Friday, May 17, assuring the public of the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
“The Electoral Commission is not capable of manipulating the 2024 general election for any party. The electoral process is transparent, with the necessary checks and the involvement of all stakeholders, including political parties, making rigging impossible in Ghana,” Tettey asserted. He emphasized that the EC cannot be held accountable for the outcomes of elections and urged political parties to properly train their agents to effectively monitor the polls.
Tettey underscored the rigorous measures in place designed to uphold the credibility of the electoral process. He highlighted that the EC has consistently engaged with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a fair and transparent election.
As the 2024 General Elections approach, the EC’s commitment to maintaining a robust and impartial electoral process remains unwavering.
