In an unprecedented announcement, the Electoral Commission (EC) has declared the parliamentary results in Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central constituencies as illegal and invalid. This decision follows revelations by the EC’s Deputy Chair for Operations, Samuel Tettey, that the re-collation process in these areas did not comply with the legal procedures outlined in CI 127.
Tettey disclosed that despite the presence of police at the collation centers, party supporters forcibly took over the process, ejecting EC staff and compelling declarations in favor of their preferred candidates. This blatant disregard for due process has led the EC to deem the results from these constituencies unlawful.
Reports indicate that EC officers were threatened and coerced into making declarations without adhering to required protocols, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
The EC’s announcement also brings attention to ongoing challenges in other constituencies. Re-collation is yet to occur in Ahafo Ano South West, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, and Techiman South. However, three constituencies – Suhum, Akwatia, and Fanteakwa North – have successfully completed the re-collation process.
Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected the parliamentary results in 13 constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya and Okaikwei Central, citing alleged irregularities and intimidation by National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters. The NPP has called on the EC to overturn the “illegal declarations” made in favor of the NDC’s parliamentary candidates.
These developments have intensified scrutiny of the EC’s ability to ensure free and fair elections, as stakeholders question the transparency and reliability of the electoral process in these constituencies.
