EC Director Was Brought From Ashanti Region To Steal The Election For NPP — Bawah Mogtari Alleges

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, legal practitioner and special aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has accused the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), Benjamin Bano-Bio, of being transferred from the Ashanti region to manipulate the 2024 elections in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mogtari made this allegation in a post on X (formerly Twitter), amidst ongoing protests by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the accuracy of the voters register.

Her statement follows a large demonstration organized by the NDC in the Ashanti region, where thousands of party supporters and executives from all 33 constituencies are demanding a forensic audit of the voters register. The NDC claims there are significant discrepancies in the provisional voter roll provided by the EC, including inflated numbers at certain polling stations, which the party views as part of a scheme to rig the December 7 polls.

The protest, initiated by NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is part of a nationwide effort to push for electoral reforms ahead of the 2024 general elections. The party has consistently raised concerns over issues within the voter register, citing the inclusion of deceased individuals, multiple registrations, and unauthorized changes in polling stations.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, NDC’s Director of Elections, recently highlighted his surprise at the scale of discrepancies discovered during the Voter Register Exhibition exercise. According to him, the register provided to the party differs from the one used in the EC’s official processes, raising serious doubts about the integrity of the upcoming elections.

The NDC insists that a forensic audit is necessary to ensure a transparent electoral process, while the Electoral Commission maintains that it is addressing any errors in the register. The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its readiness to ensure the safety of demonstrators, stating during a press conference on September 16, 2024, that adequate security measures are in place.
