Dumsor Is Back; Tell Ghanaians The Truth – Mahama Tells Akufo-Addo

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama has criticized the current government’s management of Ghana’s ongoing power crisis, accusing it of evading responsibility and downplaying the severity of the situation. Speaking to supporters in Ehiamankyene, Krachi West District, Mahama asserted that the government’s handling of the crisis could place additional burdens on the next administration if the NDC returns to power.

According to Mahama, the government’s failure to implement a load-shedding timetable has masked the full impact of the crisis, which has disrupted households and businesses nationwide. He argued that by not acknowledging the extent of the power challenges, the government is attempting to shift responsibility to a potential future NDC administration.

Mahama pointed to the recent withdrawal of Sunon Asogli, a significant independent power producer, from the energy sector as a key contributor to the power grid’s instability. He claimed that this exit has strained Ghana’s electricity supply, leading to more frequent outages, widely known as “dumsor,” and increased uncertainty about the sector’s future.

“We do not have a stable plant because Sunon Asogli has shut down its plant due to significant unpaid debt owed by the government. As a result, dumsor has returned,” Mahama stated, emphasizing that his previous administration introduced a load-shedding timetable to manage power shortages transparently. “The current government refuses to do so because they fear being blamed for bringing back dumsor,” he added.

Mahama also warned that the government plans to leave behind an estimated $2 billion in energy sector debt, which would constrain the next administration’s ability to implement effective, long-term solutions. This debt, he argued, would further deepen the sector’s challenges and complicate efforts to ensure stable power for Ghanaians.

The NDC flagbearer assured supporters that an NDC-led government would prioritize transparency and responsible energy management to restore stability in the sector. He outlined his administration’s commitment to reducing debt within the energy sector, improving operational efficiency, and preventing further disruptions.

“Dumsor is back, and they know the NDC is likely to come to power, so they are trying to shift this burden onto us,” he remarked. Mahama pledged to address these structural issues and implement sustainable solutions that will protect the power supply from future crises.

As Ghana heads toward the 2024 election, Mahama’s statements underscore the NDC’s commitment to addressing the nation’s energy challenges, highlighting the need for a transparent and proactive approach to prevent further setbacks in the sector.
