Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has emerged as the front-runner in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Aspirant election held in the United States of America (USA). Dr. Bawumia secured a resounding victory, capturing 77.04% of the votes cast, making a strong case for his bid to lead the party in the upcoming 2024 elections.

The election saw 271 out of a potential 411 eligible voters exercising their democratic right, with Dr. Bawumia clinching 208 votes, a substantial mandate representing a clear majority. His victory underscores his popularity and support among party members, including those residing abroad.

Kennedy Agyapong, another prominent contender, secured the second position with 60 votes, garnering 22.22% of the total votes cast. Dr. Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai-Nimoh both received a single vote each, highlighting the competitive nature of the race.

Dr. Bawumia’s path to victory was further paved by his significant triumph in a Super Delegates election, where the number of aspirants was reduced from ten to five. This process reaffirmed his preeminent position within the party, solidifying his standing as the leading aspirant.

The Vice President has enjoyed overwhelming support from the upper echelons of the NPP, and numerous polls have consistently indicated his strong lead in the flagbearer race. Despite spirited campaigning from his closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bawumia appears poised to secure the NPP’s nomination for the 2024 presidential elections.

The NPP is scheduled to hold its presidential primary election on Saturday, November 4, 2023, with over 200,000 party delegates participating. The outcome of this primary will determine the party’s flagbearer, who will play a pivotal role in the NPP’s efforts to secure victory in the 2024 elections and potentially make history.

As the NPP intensifies its preparations for the upcoming polls, the race for the party’s flagbearer position promises to be closely watched and highly competitive, as the NPP seeks to rally its base and present a strong candidate to the Ghanaian electorate in the 2024 general elections.
