Persons who die from the Coronavirus disease are denied their privilege of luxury as they are buried in unmarked graves without tombstone in Ghana, Joseph Asitanga, the Coordinator and Supervisor of COVID-19 burials in the Greater Accra has revealed.
He said it was done to stop the deceased from being stigmatized hence the use of unmarked graves.
Though families in Ghana usually would love to build tombstones as a way of expressing how much they cherished their beloved when they lived, they would no longer have such luxury courtesy COVID-19.
Mr. Asitanga expounded saying, “When we put blockwork to cement the grave it retards easy decomposition of the body and the possibility of collection and evaporation of whatever organisms that is there to also come to cause more sickness. For the entire grave here for the purpose of stigmatization, we did not allow labeling and naming of graves.”
The death toll Of COVID-19 as at today is 129 in the country with about 48 deceased persons so far buried at the Awudome Cemetery in Accra.
