Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the current Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West and now an independent candidate, has denied any involvement in a recent shooting incident in Agona Swedru. The incident, which saw supporters of Morrison clash with those of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate Chris Arthur, took place while both camps were campaigning in the constituency.
Speaking on the JoyNews Election Brief, Morrison addressed the incident directly, clarifying her position and condemning any use of firearms during political activities. “I must be very frank with you, I did not hear the gunshot,” Morrison stated, adding that following the clash, she questioned all members of her campaign team regarding possession of a firearm. “After the shooting incident, I called all the boys I work with and asked them who had a gun. They said they didn’t have one. We all attended a wedding before the program, so how could we carry a gun when going to an event like this?” she queried on Monday, October 28, 2024.
Morrison also expressed her uncertainty over whether the incident was an attempt on her life, refraining from making any definitive conclusions. The tense confrontation has prompted significant attention, with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) expected to visit the Agona West constituency in response. Local police have launched a formal investigation into the matter to determine the circumstances surrounding the clash.
The violence resulted in injuries to four individuals, including the constituency’s Nasara Coordinator, Rasheed Haruna, who is reportedly in severe condition and receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The other three injured individuals are being treated at the Swedru Government Hospital.
