The Chief of Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region has revealed that he expelled Nana Kwame Bediako, leader of the New Force, from his land for holding a campaign durbar without seeking his permission. The chief, Nana Dwamena Dankwa II, expressed his dissatisfaction over the incident, citing traditional protocol and respect for authority as key reasons for his decision.
According to Nana Dankwa II, political leaders and organizations must follow local customs, which include visiting the palace to inform the chief of any major events, particularly those involving public gatherings. In the case of the New Force’s durbar, no such visit was made, leading to the chief’s directive for Nana Kwame Bediako and his team to leave Drobonso immediately.
In an interview, Nana Dankwa II emphasized the importance of respecting traditional leadership, especially when operating within their jurisdiction. “It is important that anyone who wants to hold a public event on our land comes to the palace for permission,” he said. “Failing to do so is not only disrespectful to our customs but also undermines the authority of traditional leaders.”
The chief further noted that his actions were not politically motivated but rooted in ensuring that the proper procedures are followed. He reiterated that all political parties and organizations are welcome to campaign in his area, provided they adhere to the necessary protocols.
The expulsion has sparked discussions about the need for political leaders to engage with traditional authorities as part of their outreach efforts. Nana Kwame Bediako has yet to publicly respond to the chief’s decision.
