Chief Justice Anin Yeboah Retires Today After 42 Years Of Meritorious Service

Kwasi Anin Yeboah, who served as Ghana’s 14th Chief Justice, is stepping down from his position on May 24, 2023, after leading the country’s Judiciary for a period of three years.

As per the Conditions of Service for judges of superior courts in Ghana, Kwasi Anin Yeboah, who celebrates his 70th birthday today, is obliged to retire due to the compulsory retirement age.

Born on May 24, 1953, in Toase, a town situated in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, Kwasi Anin Yeboah received his secondary education at both Amaniampong Secondary School and Apam Secondary School. He later pursued his legal studies at the University of Ghana and subsequently underwent training as a lawyer at the Ghana School of Law. He was admitted to the bar in 1981.

After completing his legal training, Anin Yeboah had a long and distinguished career as a lawyer. He held the position of Assistant State Attorney in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region of Ghana. Additionally, he served as a partner in the esteemed law firm, Afisem Chambers.

Demonstrating his commitment to the legal profession, Anin Yeboah took on the role of President of the Eastern Regional Bar Association, actively working towards the advancement of the legal field. In 2002, he was appointed as a judge of the High Court, and within a year, he was promoted to the Court of Appeal in 2003. His distinguished career led him to his ultimate appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court in 2008.

In 2019, President Akufo-Addo selected Anin Yeboah as the Chief Justice designate, subject to parliamentary approval. On January 7, 2020, he was officially sworn in as the Chief Justice of Ghana. Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has been nominated as his potential successor and is currently awaiting parliamentary approval.

If confirmed, she will assume the role of Chief Justice, succeeding Anin Yeboah.
