Chairman Wontumi Spends Another Night In Custody After Failing To Meet Bail Conditions

Before his transfer to EOCO, Wontumi was questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service over his alleged involvement in illegal mining operations—commonly referred to in Ghana as galamsey. EOCO is now investigating him further for suspected financial loss to the state, a charge that carries both legal and political implications.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, spent the night in custody at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after his legal team failed to meet bail requirements.

Wontumi, who is under investigation for alleged involvement in illegal mining, was granted bail on Tuesday evening. The bail was set at GH¢50 million (approximately $3.8 million), with two sureties, both of whom were required to be justified. However, his lawyers were unable to satisfy the conditions within the given timeframe.

“This is part of an ongoing investigation, and we are cooperating fully. We’re hopeful the conditions will be met shortly,” said his lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, speaking to reporters outside the EOCO office in Accra.

According to his legal team, the ongoing inquiry focuses on accusations that he operated mining activities without the required licenses, polluted water bodies, and encroached on protected forest reserves.

As word of his detention spread, supporters and some NPP executives gathered outside EOCO’s offices late into the night. Many chanted and held placards, accusing the authorities of political bias and persecution.

Although Chairman Wontumi has consistently denied involvement in illegal mining, he has previously come under scrutiny from environmental agencies. This is, however, the first time he has faced formal charges of this nature.

Known for his outspoken personality and strong media presence, Wontumi is a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics and has played a significant role in strengthening the NPP’s base in the Ashanti Region.

Former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has responded to the situation, expressing concern over Wontumi’s arrest and continued detention. He revealed that he has been in close contact with Wontumi’s legal team and commended them for their dedication.

“I commend them for their professionalism and vigilance,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “I urge EOCO and all relevant institutions to uphold the rule of law and ensure due process is followed at all times.”

He also cautioned against any actions that might erode public confidence in the justice system, stressing the importance of preserving Ghana’s democratic principles.

For now, Chairman Wontumi remains in EOCO custody while efforts continue to meet his bail conditions. The case is being closely watched as a potential milestone in Ghana’s fight against corruption and illegal mining.
