Bawumia To Launch Ghana’s Credit Scoring System On Nov. 7

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flag-bearer, has reiterated his commitment to transforming Ghana’s economy by leveraging digital technology. Speaking at the launch of his 15-day tour in the Ashanti Region, held in Nyinahin, Atwima Mponua District, Dr. Bawumia announced the upcoming launch of Ghana’s first national credit scoring system on November 7, 2024. This initiative, the second of its kind in Africa after South Africa, aims to facilitate Ghanaians’ access to credit, enabling citizens to make purchases on credit and ultimately improve their quality of life.

To support this new credit system, the government has already established essential digital infrastructure, including the Ghana Card, the digital address system, and mobile money interoperability. Dr. Bawumia highlighted these developments as foundational to encouraging wider participation in the new credit scoring system.

A key part of his economic transformation agenda also includes revamping Ghana’s railway system. He emphasized plans to redevelop the Kumasi–Takoradi railway line, which would pass through Nyinahin, facilitating the transport of bauxite from mining areas to ports. Dr. Bawumia said this redevelopment is a priority for his potential administration to enhance the efficient movement of goods, especially from rural areas to major trading hubs.

In another policy move, Dr. Bawumia revealed that the government intends to extend the validity period of driver’s licenses from six to ten years. Passport acquisition processes would also be simplified, allowing applicants to use a single Ghana Card.

Dr. Bawumia praised the government’s achievements across various sectors, including education, healthcare, technology, and infrastructure, noting that the NPP’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy has notably increased school enrollment and eased financial pressures on families. According to Dr. Bawumia, recent government initiatives have also generated significant employment opportunities for young Ghanaians, contributing to economic growth.

Highlighting the success of the Planting for Food and Jobs program, Dr. Bawumia noted that Ghana is currently ranked third in Africa for food security. He pledged to prioritize agricultural development further, proposing large investments in agricultural mechanization centers nationwide to enhance food production and sustainability.

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia discussed plans to foster private sector-led development, aiming to relieve the state of certain financial responsibilities. He assured that a ‘Buy Ghana First’ policy would be rigorously enforced to prioritize Ghanaian-made goods in government procurement projects.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Bawumia urged voters to support the NPP on December 7 to enable the implementation of the “Big Solutions” initiative, designed to transform Ghana and improve citizens’ living conditions.

Seth Osei Akoto, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Atwima-Mponua, echoed Dr. Bawumia’s sentiments. He acknowledged the NPP government’s contributions to the constituency’s development and highlighted the Free SHS policy’s impact on children’s education. Mr. Akoto encouraged the people of Atwima-Mponua to vote for the NPP to continue the progress made under the current administration and bring further socio-economic improvements to Ghana.
