Bawumia Honors Nayiri’s Call For Peace As He Visits Bawku Naba

In response to the recent plea from the Overlord of Mamprugu Kingdom, Naa Abdulai Mahami Shariga, Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, made a significant visit to Bawku on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, to address longstanding conflicts and foster unity among various factions.

The visit followed a call by the Nayiri for Dr. Bawumia to intervene in the protracted Bawku conflict, urging him to utilize his unifying leadership traits to bring together the feuding factions. The Vice President heeded this call and engaged in a courtesy call at the Palace of Bawku Na Ba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

Expressing joy over the visit, Bawku Na Ba welcomed Dr. Bawumia and acknowledged the crucial role he could play in restoring peace to the region. He emphasized the adverse effects of the conflict, citing loss of lives and property over the past two years and its expansion into neighboring towns.

During the discussions at the Palace, Bawku Na Ba articulated his confidence in Dr. Bawumia as a pivotal northern figure in the government, stating, “I have a firm belief that if you become President, you will want to preside over a peaceful nation and a peaceful Kusaug Traditional Area that will support your vision for development.”

The Bawku Naba assigned the task of bringing an end to the conflict to Dr. Bawumia, citing the Vice President’s demonstrated qualities of humility, respect, calmness, unity, and genuine commitment to the people. He expressed optimism that Dr. Bawumia could successfully deliver lasting peace for the benefit of Mamprugu and Ghana as a whole.

In response, Dr. Bawumia thanked the Bawku Naba for the warm reception and affirmed his commitment to fostering peace not only in Bawku but throughout Ghana. He urged both the Mamprusis and Kusasis to cease hostilities and unite for the sake of lasting peace and development.

The Vice President stated, “This is a task I am assigning you, and I have no doubt that you can and will successfully deliver this to the glory of Kusaug and Mamprugu in particular, and Ghana as a whole.”

As the visit concluded, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his dedication to peace, not only in his current capacity as Vice President but also expressing hope to continue this mission “by the grace of God, if I become President.” The visit marked a significant step towards resolving the longstanding conflict and fostering unity in the Bawku region.
