In a heartwarming display of community solidarity, the afternoon social issues show “Oyerepa Afutuo,” hosted by Auntie Naa on Kumasi-based Oyerepa Radio, successfully launched an initiative to raise funds for the life-saving surgery of an 11-year-old boy, Lord, who suffers from a congenital heart defect known as a hole in the heart.

The emotionally charged episode aired yesterday, featuring the desperate plea of Lord’s mother who brought her son to the show in search of support for his urgent medical needs. Throughout the three-hour broadcast, the atmosphere was poignant, especially when Lord’s headteacher described his vibrant presence in the classroom and how his deteriorating health has adversely impacted his academic performance.

The appeal struck a chord with listeners far and wide. Contributions poured in from market women, loyal listeners both local and abroad, and various other well-wishers, culminating in a remarkable total of 130,000 Ghana Cedis by the end of the broadcast. This significant sum was raised solely through the generosity of Oyerepa Radio’s audience and the tireless efforts of Auntie Naa and her team.

In addition to the funds raised on the show, Lord received substantial donations from his community. His church, the Methodist Church, contributed 30,000 Ghana Cedis, his school provided 10,000 Ghana Cedis, and the Methodist Boys’ Brigade added another 10,000 Ghana Cedis to the cause.

The cumulative efforts of these contributions will ensure that Lord receives the critical surgery he needs, offering him a renewed chance at a healthy and active life.

The success of this fundraiser exemplifies the power of community and the profound impact of collective action. Oyerepa Afutuo’s initiative not only highlights the urgent healthcare needs of vulnerable individuals but also showcases the compassion and generosity of the people of Ghana, especially those in Kumasi.
