Black Stars midfielder Mubarak Wakaso has disclosed that he spoke with Christian Atsu, a bossom buddy and teammate, on the day that Atsu became buried in earthquake debris, an occurrence that ultimately resulted in his death.
It was a typical talk between them, but Wakaso claims that the focus of their conversation was primarily on him making fun of the deceased Hatayspor winger for scoring the game-winning goal the day before in a league game.
“It was the same day. He scored in their match and he shared the video on his social media pages. So I called him and I was teasing him that ‘you are not allowing us to have peace because of the cheap goal you scored’ and we laughed over it,” Wakaso told Accra-based Peace FM in an interview monitored by Pak MediaGh.com
In their parting words, Atsu promised to call him back, which he said he hoped had occurred in the following three days.
That would be the last conversation the two good friends would have before Atsu’s body was recovered from the rubble 12 days later.
Christian Atsu died as a result of the effects of a massive earthquake that struck parts of Turkey and Syria more than a week ago.
The former Black Stars player’s body was discovered under rubble more than a week after the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck on February6, 2023.
