Assin North MP Eager To Go To Jail

The  New Patriotic Party (NPP) Eastern Regional Organizer hopeful, Rev Opoku Acheampong, has said that Gyakie Quayson is eager to go to Nsawam Prisons.

In an Interview on Wontumi radio, he reminded the former Assin North Member of Parliament (MP) that on the day of his judgement the people who are supporting him will not be around when it is time to go to prison.

“ Some people are not scared of the law, it seems Gyakie Quayson is joking with the court. He went against the constitution- he knew holding a dual citizenship and taking political position was against the law but he went ahead to contest’’, he said.

‘’The court is fair. If I were to be the judge, I would have sent him to Nsawam by now. From all indications, it shows he wants to go to prison the reason he is going against Supreme Court’s judgement”.

‘’The Court says he should go and relax but he is zealous to go to prison’’, he added.

On the 13th of April, 2022, Hon Gyakie Quayson filed an application for a review of the Supreme Court’s judgement restraining him from holding himself as a Member of Parliament or performing any parliamentary duty. His lawyers on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, filed the application arguing among other things that the court’s decision “was in patent and fundamental error and violated article 129(3) of the Constitution.’’

Mr Quayson at the time of filing to contest for the 2020 elections on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) held an allegiance to Canada which was contrary to Article 94 (2) (a) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which states that: ‘A person shall not be qualified to be a Member of Parliament if he – (a) owes allegiance to a country other than Ghana’.

According to him the ruling conveyed by the High Court was based on law and fact.
