Asiedu Nketia Accuses House Of Chiefs President Of Campaigning For NPP
The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has raised concerns about Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, the President of the National House of Chiefs, alleging that he has abandoned his neutral role by engaging in partisan politics in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking to residents of Odumase in the Asante Akim Central Constituency during his campaign in the Ashanti Region on Sunday, November 10, Asiedu Nketia accused Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II of actively supporting the NPP rather than using his position to mediate the current political disputes in parliament. This partisanship, according to Nketia, could damage the credibility of the National House of Chiefs and harm the democratic process in Ghana.
Nketia went on to allege that Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II has compromised the traditional values of his position by visibly supporting the NPP. “He claims to be the president of the National House of Chiefs, yet I’ve seen him wearing NPP-branded clothing, campaigning for the party in his hometown,” Nketia said. He questioned how a leader of traditional authorities could address issues within the government impartially if he openly aligns himself with one political party.
Nketia argued that Ghana now lacks a neutral traditional authority to critique governmental missteps, stating, “The National House of Chiefs should be in the position to help resolve the issues ongoing in parliament.” His remarks reflect broader concerns about the role of traditional authorities in Ghana and their influence on the country’s political stability and democratic framework.
