Anybody Who Has ‘Chopped’ Money From Keta Port Will Be Held Accountable When I Come To Power – John Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer for the 2024 election, John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to hold accountable those who have misappropriated funds related to the stalled Keta Port project if he is elected President.

Speaking during a tour of the Keta Constituency in the Volta Region, Mahama criticized the current administration for allocating $8 million, supposedly from dividends generated by the Meridian Port Services (MPS) deal, to build an administration block for what he termed a “non-existent port.”

Mahama explained that the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GAPOHA), which is a partner in the MPS deal, has earned $280 million in dividends since the project’s completion. However, he questioned the rationale behind constructing a new port between the established Tema Harbour and the Port of Lomé without first conducting a proper needs assessment.

He cautioned against repeating the mistakes of the Boankra Inland Port project in the Ashanti Region, which he described as a “white elephant” due to its lack of impact despite the initial $70 million investment.

Mahama pledged to launch an investigation into the Keta Port project if he assumes office, stating that any individual found guilty of mismanaging funds will be held accountable. He emphasized that a thorough audit will be conducted to determine how resources have been used, and that those responsible for any financial misdeeds will face the necessary consequences.
