Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, the Chief of Army Staff, has issued a firm warning to individuals fueling the unrest in Bawku, declaring that attacks on civilians or military personnel will be treated as acts of extremism and met with a forceful response.
Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday after visiting the conflict-ridden town in the Upper East Region, Major General Gbetanu emphasized the Ghana Armed Forces’ (GAF) determination to crack down on violence.
“Let me serve a clear warning to those behind the disturbances in Bawku—your days are numbered. Any aggression against innocent civilians or soldiers will be deemed extremism, and we will respond with the full might of our forces,” he stated.
He further cautioned that there would be “no safe haven” for those who choose violence, vowing that security forces would relentlessly pursue and apprehend armed perpetrators.
Earlier in the day, the Army Chief met with the Kusaug Traditional Council, urging collaboration between traditional leaders and security agencies to restore peace. He called on chiefs to help restrain the youth and prevent confrontations with military personnel, underscoring the importance of mutual respect in maintaining stability.
This visit marks Major General Gbetanu’s first official trip to Bawku since assuming office, highlighting the military’s heightened focus on quelling the prolonged conflict in the area.
