Amidu Using Akufo-Addo to Launch NDC Flagbearer Campaign – Evans Nimako Suggests

The New Patriotic Party’s, NPP, Director of Research and Elections, Evans Nimako, has responded to some comments made by former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, in his latest epistle.

In an interview with pro-NPP, Asaase Radio on Thursday (August 11), Nimako suggested that Amidu was seeking relevance with the latest piece, which accuses President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of making national security adjustments with an eye on the 2024 elections.

“I think that he is just trying to make himself relevant to place himself to either become a presidential candidate for the NDC because this whole outburst is needless.

“He says the good people of Ghana should defend the constitution; is there any breach of the constitution by the actions of the president? The answer is no. So what is the need for Mr Martin Amidu’s article? Needless!” Nimako added.

Nimako stressed that it was worrying that Amidu wanted people to believe that national security appointments could be related to national elections.

He suggested that Amidu’s latest move is linked with his ambitions in the National Democratic Congress, NDC, where he claims Amidu is positioning himself to contest for the 2024 flagbearership slot of the party.

“I am surprised that Mr Martin Amidu would want people to believe that if the President appoints national security officers, it has a link with the conduct of a national election. Let me find out, are they going to work with the Electoral Commission as EC commissioners?

“It is unfortunate his outburst is coming with a lot of confusion, he just wants to make himself relevant. He should rather prepare himself to contest for the NDC ticket, go out with Mr Mahama and have their battle.

“For us as New Patriotic Party, we have always said the battle is the Lord’s and come what may, the good people of Ghana in December 2024, will give the mandate to the party (NPP)” Nimako noted.

The pioneer Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, in an August 11 epistle titled: ‘NEW LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENTS TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY APPARATUS AND AKUFO-ADDO’S LONG GAME OF BREAKING THE EIGHT,’ called on the citizenry to defend the Constitution against alleged attempts by President Akufo-Addo to undermine the 2024 elections to skew victory towards the governing New Patriotic Party.

“Upon his assumption of office as the President of Ghana on 7 January 2017 Nana Akufo-Addo activated his long game to break the 8 at the 2024 Presidential Election.

“He determined to ensure that by the middle of his second term in office all the instruments of law enforcement, state security and intelligence power of the Republic of Ghana should be led by persons with proven political dedication and loyalty to his person, and his family and friends.

“The appointment by the President of Mr. Edward Asomani, Deputy National Security Co-ordinator, to act as National Security Co-ordinator, with effect from Monday, 8th August 2022 subject to the confirmation of his appointment to the receipt of the constitutionally required advice of the National Security Council, given in consultation with the Public Service Commission gives finality to Nana Akufo-Addo’s long game to capture the National Security Secretariat apparatus towards his electoral agenda for the 2024 parliamentary and presidential elections,” his piece read in part.
