Akufo-Addo’s Lawyer, Other Professionals Mount Counter-Attack Against Sam George’s Anti-LGBTQI Law

A group of Ghanaian intellectuals including President Akufo-Addo’s lead counsel in the 2020 election petition, Lawyer Akoto Ampaw have kicked against the bill seeking to criminalize same sex relations in Ghana.

The anti-LGBTQI law, spearheaded by a coalition of MPs including Ningo Prampram MP, Sam George has gained massive attention in recent times following its far-reaching consequences.

However, following a notice by the Parliamentary Service, requesting for written memoranda on the yet to be considered bill, some Ghanaian intellectuals have also mounted a strong resistance.

The said intellectuals include; Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo, Prof. Kofi Gyimah-Boadi, Dr. Rose Kutin-Mensah, Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, Prof. Raymond Atuguba and Mr. Akoto Ampaw.

The group argue that passage of the anti-LGBTQI law will amount to sacrificing fundamental human rights on the basis of so-called cultural values.

The group further argued that per article 18 of Ghana’s constitution, the country is practicing a secular democracy and not a theocracy or monarchy.

According to the group, Ghana’s constitution clearly forbids the imposition of a religious dogma on Ghanaians.
