Akufo-Addo Hurriedly Refunds GHS 237K Salary Increment After Guinea Coup

In a latest development, President Akufo-Addo has refunded to the state, an amount of GHS 237,000 which was paid to him as salary Increment from January to August 2021.

The said salary Increment forms part of the much criticized recommendations of the Salaries and Emoluments committee.

This report came out as strange since the President had publicly claimed that he had ordered a freeze on his and Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia’s salaries as part of austerity measures to revive the economy after the woes of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the director of communications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, the President took the decision to refund the money to the state after he learned that his directive had been flouted.

“For some reason when the president received his salary accrued from January to August this year, he noticed that the directive he gave had not been enforced and so leading by example, Thursday, the 2nd of September 2021, he wrote a cheque amounting to GH¢237,000 to the Pensions and Salaries account of the Controller and Account General’s account department to reflect the decision he has taken to freeze salary increment for himself,” Eugene Arhin said.

This comes just a day after the President’s friend and colleague in Guinea, Alpha Conde was overthrown in a bloodless coup.
