In a troubling incident in Tamale, Northern Region, unidentified individuals have looted the Ministry of Agriculture warehouse, stealing agricultural inputs valued at thousands of Cedis. The stolen items include bags of rice, packages of chemicals, fertilizers, maize, and other essential farm supplies.
Security forces comprising personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the military quickly responded to the situation, arresting several suspects at the scene. However, numerous individuals fled upon spotting the authorities.
In addition to the Ministry of Agriculture’s warehouse, the Tamale Metro Assembly’s storage facility and the residence of the Sagnarigu Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) were also targeted by looters. Various items were reportedly stolen from these locations.
Hajia Hawa Musah, Northern Regional Director of Agriculture, confirmed the incident and revealed that the looted supplies were intended for women farmers affected by a severe dry spell in the region. “These items were brought for women farmers who have been greatly affected by the drought. Due to the election period, we had to delay distribution, but we anticipated hunger and wanted to assist,” she explained.
Hajia Musah further appealed to the Northern Regional Police Command to enhance security measures around the warehouse to prevent further incidents.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that those arrested will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to deter future occurrences. Efforts are underway to identify additional culprits and recover the stolen items.
