Abstaining From UN LGBTQI Vote Contradicts Ghana’s Values – Sam George

Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communications, has reiterated his unwavering opposition to LGBTQ+ rights, aligning himself with Ghana’s official statement on the controversial UN draft resolution L.24. However, he expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Ghanaian government’s decision to abstain from the subsequent vote, calling it a betrayal of the nation’s values.

In a Facebook post, the MP for Ningo-Prampram insisted that Ghana’s position on LGBTQ+ issues must remain “clear and unambiguous.” He argued that abstaining from the vote contradicted the country’s stated principles and his personal conscience.

Parliamentary Push for Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill
Hon. Sam George also revealed that he and his parliamentary colleagues have resubmitted the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, a highly contentious piece of legislation passed by Parliament in 2023 but left unsigned by former president Nana Akufo-Addo. The bill seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy, imposing severe penalties.

The MP urged Parliament to fast-track the bill’s approval so it can be presented to President John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing that the “innocence of Ghanaian children and the sanctity of our values cannot be traded for any considerations.”

International and Domestic Reactions
Ghana’s hardline stance on LGBTQ+ rights has drawn both local support and international criticism. Human rights organizations have condemned the proposed bill as discriminatory, while conservative groups and religious leaders in Ghana have backed the legislation.

Hon. Sam George’s latest remarks signal an intensification of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ advocacy, setting the stage for another heated debate as the bill returns to Parliament. With the 2024 elections approaching, the issue is likely to remain a key topic in Ghana’s sociopolitical discourse.
