Abetifi: Court Remands 26 Into Custody Over Kidnap Of Chief

The Mpraeso District Court, led by Her Ladyship Adwoa Akyemaa Ofosu, has ordered 26 individuals to be held in police custody following charges linked to the alleged abduction and unlawful arrest of Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, the Kwahu Abetifihene. The suspects are expected to appear again in court on November 14, 2024. Among those detained is one female.

This incident, which escalated into a violent confrontation, reportedly involved a group of armed individuals entering the Abetifi Palace to initiate a destoolment process against Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, who is also acting President of the Kwahu Traditional Area. The clash, which occurred on November 7, left six people injured, as the situation quickly turned intense.

According to sources close to Citi News, the situation intensified when Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, who introduced herself as the Abrewatia (a senior traditional female figure) of the Kwahu area, arrived at the palace with armed individuals. She and her entourage reportedly removed Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III to an older palace location, where she performed rituals intended to destool him, including the ceremonial slaughter of a sheep.

News of this attempted destoolment rapidly spread across the community, inciting an outcry among local youth. Armed with machetes, these young people gathered in large numbers to protest the alleged action, further raising tensions in the area.

The case continues to draw attention as the community awaits the next court appearance, where further legal proceedings are expected to unfold.
