According to Legal Aid lawyer Frederick Asamoah, a man might be sentenced to six months in prison for having two wives.
According to the lawyer, the law recognizes a pair as consisting of a man and a wife.
Mr Asamoah stated to Daakyehene Ofosu Agyeman, host of the show “My Lawyer My Counselor,” that while marriage by ordinance is limited to two persons, traditional marriage allows a man to marry as many as he wants.
“It’s a man and a woman, and the law refers to him or her, thus a woman who is married by ordinance cannot marry again. If the marriage is under ordinance, it is against the law to marry additional people; nevertheless, if the marriage is customary, you can marry more people.”
If a guy breaks this legislation, he can be imprisoned for six months.
”The law recognizes one man, one wife, and one can be imprisoned for up to six months,” he continued.
