Jean Mensa, the Chair of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), has called on outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and incoming President John Dramani Mahama to provide security for EC officials to enable the successful completion of the 2024 general elections.
Her appeal follows the EC’s decision to nullify parliamentary results in nine constituencies, citing that the declarations were made under duress. The affected constituencies are Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano South, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, Techiman South, and Dome-Kwabenya.
Nullification of Results
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, December 19, Madam Mensa explained that threats against EC staff rendered the declarations in these constituencies invalid.
“The declarations made by our staff were under threats, and we consider them illegal. We will not uphold results made under threats or duress,” she stated.
She assured the public that the unresolved collations in the affected constituencies would be handled through due process, emphasizing the commission’s commitment to transparency and integrity.
Call for Presidential Intervention
Madam Mensa urged both the outgoing and incoming Presidents to ensure the safety of Electoral Commission personnel.
“We call on Akufo-Addo and John Mahama to intervene in this matter and provide the commission with adequate security,” she said, stressing the importance of a secure environment for the completion of electoral processes.
Public Concerns
The EC’s announcement has sparked debate about electoral integrity and the potential implications for parliamentary representation in the nine constituencies. Citizens and stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation as the commission moves to address the outstanding collations.
Both political leaders have yet to comment on the EC’s request and decision. Meanwhile, calls for calm and adherence to due process continue to resonate across the nation.
