Two Arrested For Vandalizing Vehicles At Ghana’s Parliament House

Two individuals have been arrested for vandalizing vehicles within the premises of the Parliament House in Accra. The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, December 18, 2024, prompting concerns over security at one of Ghana’s most critical institutions.

The suspects, Wisdom Ahlie, 42, and Christopher Okyere, 33, were apprehended around 10:30 am by the Parliamentary Security Unit. Witnesses reported that the duo used an axe to smash the windscreens and windows of five vehicles parked on the premises. Among the damaged vehicles were two Toyota Land Cruisers belonging to Members of Parliament, a Toyota Rav 4, and two Toyota Camrys used by staff of the Parliamentary Service.

While the motive for the act remains unclear, the swift response from security personnel ensured the suspects were detained and handed over to the Parliamentary Protection Unit of the Ghana Police Service for further investigation.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident, though the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.

In an official statement, Parliament confirmed the incident and assured the public that it is being treated with the utmost seriousness. Authorities have launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the act.

“The security of Parliament, its members, staff, and visitors is of paramount importance. Measures are being reviewed to ensure such incidents do not recur,” the statement read.

The arrests have sparked discussions about the adequacy of security measures at the Parliament House, a location that regularly hosts lawmakers, staff, and the public.
