President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to critically evaluate former President John Dramani Mahama’s track record as he campaigns for a return to the presidency in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking during an engagement with professional groups and party supporters in Kumasi at the beginning of his three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, President Akufo-Addo attributed Mahama’s 2016 electoral defeat to dissatisfaction with his performance as president.

“There are four other individuals who have been blessed by the Almighty and the people of Ghana to serve as Presidents,” Akufo-Addo remarked. “Jerry John Rawlings had a second term, John Agyekum Kufuor had a second term, and I have had a second term. The only one who was not given a second term was John Dramani Mahama. There is a reason for that—Ghanaians were unhappy with his abysmal performance.”

The President specifically questioned Mahama’s campaign promise of delivering a “24-hour economy,” pointing to the persistent power outages, popularly known as “dumsor,” that plagued Mahama’s administration.

“He is now promising a 24-hour economy. But how can you promise that when, during your presidency, you couldn’t even ensure 12 hours of uninterrupted electricity? Let’s not be swayed by such promises,” he cautioned.

Akufo-Addo used the opportunity to highlight his government’s achievements in infrastructure development, education, and healthcare, emphasizing its commitment to improving the lives of Ghanaians despite ongoing challenges.

The President’s visit to the Ashanti Region includes inspections of ongoing projects, interactions with traditional leaders, and meetings with various stakeholders. These engagements form part of efforts to galvanize support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and ensure successful implementation of developmental initiatives ahead of the 2024 elections.
