The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has assured Ghanaians that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy will not only be maintained but also strengthened under his leadership. Speaking to Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, Mahama underscored his commitment to sustaining the programme byintroducing dedicated funding to ensure its long-term success and quality.
In his address, Mahama dismissed rumors that he would discontinue Free SHS as “political gimmicks” intended to mislead voters. He emphasized that the NDC recognizes the significant role the policy has played in expanding access to education and is committed to enhancing it, rather than dismantling it.
Mahama acknowledged the program’s achievements, noting that Free SHS has improved access to secondary education for many Ghanaians. However, he pointed out that sustainable funding is essential to maintain and enhance the quality of the program, addressing various challenges currently facing its implementation. “Free SHS has come to stay,” he affirmed, emphasizing the NDC’s intention to not only keep the policy but also to make it a long-lasting, effective initiative for future generations.
Amid ongoing public debate, Mahama clarified the NDC’s stance on Free SHS, reiterating that the policy’s effectiveness relies on reliable and sufficient funding. He explained, “We must ensure it’s well-funded to improve its quality and keep it going,” suggesting that his administration would prioritize measures to secure and allocate resources for the program.
In addition to his commitment to financial sustainability, Mahama highlighted the broader impact of quality education on students’ futures. He promised that, under his leadership, Free SHS would receive the support needed to respond to the changing demands of the education system, ultimately benefiting students and equipping them for success.
