As Ghana approaches the 2024 general elections, National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has underscored that peace cannot thrive without justice.
In a Facebook post on November 3, Mahama stressed the need for a society built on fairness, security, and respect for every Ghanaian, calling on all stakeholders to work toward a just and inclusive nation.
This message followed his suspension of campaign activities to attend the launch of a National Peace Campaign, organized by leading religious bodies including the Ghana Pentecostal & Charismatic Council and the Christian Council of Ghana.
Mahama asserted that peace is more than the absence of violence; it requires active justice, equality, and mutual respect among citizens. “True peace cannot exist without justice. We must all relentlessly pursue a just society where every Ghanaian feels secure and valued,” he stated, emphasizing the need for proactive measures in addressing societal tensions to prevent tragedies and conflicts.
He highlighted recent violence in Bawku as a painful example of what happens when underlying issues are left unaddressed, resulting in needless loss of lives and disruption to families. Reflecting on this, Mahama called for a national commitment to addressing conflicts before they escalate, framing this approach as essential for a peaceful and stable Ghana.
