The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a pointed response to former President John Dramani Mahama’s recent public questioning of his record as Vice President. Dr. Bawumia urged Mahama to participate in a face-to-face debate to give Ghanaians a clear view of their respective policies, achievements, and visions, rather than, as he put it, “hiding behind flimsy questions.”
Mahama’s five-question challenge to Dr. Bawumia follows his 2016 approach of presenting 170 questions to then-Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, a strategy aimed at scrutinizing the incumbent administration’s record. Dr. Bawumia, however, downplayed the relevance of Mahama’s questions, calling them “flimsy” and asserting that his own record could withstand greater scrutiny.
“I would have thought he would be man enough to face me in a one-on-one debate for the Ghanaian public to assess our respective policies, achievements, and visions,” Dr. Bawumia stated in a press release. “He should not hide behind these flimsy questions to avoid a debate.”
In a move to escalate the challenge, Dr. Bawumia presented his own list of 50 questions targeting Mahama’s record, focusing on key issues such as economic policies, infrastructure, and social interventions. He proposed that in a debate, he would gladly address Mahama’s five questions and allow a broader discussion moderated by neutral parties.
This latest exchange highlights the intensifying competition between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the 2024 elections draw near. Both candidates have pointed to their respective policy records, with Dr. Bawumia emphasizing reforms in education, infrastructure, and digitalization as key achievements under the NPP. The public awaits Mahama’s response to Dr. Bawumia’s challenge, which may set the stage for a much-anticipated debate on Ghana’s future leadership.
