Cynthia Morrison Refutes Claims of Abandoning Independent Candidacy

Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, has firmly denied rumors suggesting she is reconsidering her decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections. These speculations arose after photographs emerged on October 22, 2024, showing her in the company of some members of the Majority in Parliament’s Job 600 office.

Following her loss to Christopher Arthur in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries, Morrison had announced her intention to run independently. This declaration caused a stir, prompting Speaker Alban Bagbin to declare her seat, along with three others, vacant. However, the Supreme Court later intervened with a stay of execution after Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson cited constitutional provisions, which stipulate that MPs running as independent candidates must vacate their seats.

The Supreme Court’s intervention followed an application by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who sought clarification on the status of the four MPs, including Morrison, who plan to contest the December 2024 elections either as independent candidates or under the NPP.

Despite the speculation fueled by the recent photos, Morrison issued a statement on October 22, dismissing the rumors as unfounded. She unequivocally reaffirmed her commitment to contesting as an independent candidate and urged her supporters to disregard the misinformation circulating about her candidacy.

“We wish to categorically state that these reports are false and do not reflect the Hon MP’s current position or intentions. Hon. Cynthia Morrison, the sitting MP for Agona West, remains committed to serving the constituents and has made no such announcement retracting her decision to run independently,” the statement read.

Morrison further emphasized her dedication to the development of Agona West and her intention to continue advocating for her constituents, calling on her supporters to remain vigilant against misleading information. She assured them that her decision to contest the upcoming elections as an independent candidate is unwavering.
