Speaker Bagbin Has Not Reached Any Settlement Agreement With Akufo-Addo – Parliament Clarifies

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has denied claims circulating on social media that he recently met with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to negotiate a settlement regarding his declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. The Speaker’s office has firmly refuted these rumors, clarifying that no such meeting took place.

The controversy stems from Speaker Bagbin’s October 17 decision to declare the Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West parliamentary seats vacant. The Supreme Court has since issued a stay on the execution of this ruling, pending further deliberations. Amid this ongoing situation, a video has been shared on social media falsely suggesting that the Speaker met with the President to negotiate on the matter.

In a statement released by Parliament on Tuesday, October 22, it was explained that the video in question was actually from July 4, 2024, during the presentation of the maiden Democracy Cup to the President. The video has been wrongly labeled to mislead the public, according to the statement, which emphasized that there is “no iota of truth” in the insinuation that the Speaker engaged in negotiations over the vacant seats with the President.

The Speaker’s office urged the public to disregard the misleading video and the false narrative being circulated, calling it a disingenuous attempt to undermine the integrity of the Speaker and Parliament. The statement concluded by advising people to treat the video and related rumors with “the contempt it deserves.”
