MP for the Asawase Constituency, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has stated that the Electoral Commission’s compilation of new voters’ register is the biggest mistake made by the Nana Addo-led NPP government.
According to him, the exercise is a waste of resources especially in these abnormal times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking to GhanaWeb, the minority chief whip in Parliament stated that the EC’s exercise demonstrated government’s carelessness in handling state funds.
Hon. Muntaka said, “The sad thing about coronavirus is that the consequences of it do not manifest immediately, they manifest later. This was the biggest mistake that this government and the EC have made but they will not admit to it.”
The Asawase legislator further stated that the new register is still bloated looking at the provisional figures from the EC.
“Now they targeted to do 15 million and they’ve gone past 15 million is it bloated? In Asawase our old register was about 102,000 and as at yesterday we had done almost 101,000 and they have a mop-up for Saturday and Sunday, I will be very surprised if we don’t surpass the old number. So then I ask what they have really done,” Hon. Muntaka Mubarak queried.
