NDC Files Injunction Against Electoral Commission Over Amenfi Central Ballot Printing

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its Amenfi Central parliamentary candidate, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, have filed a motion at the High Court in Accra, seeking an interlocutory injunction against the Electoral Commission (EC). The motion, submitted on Thursday, 17 October 2024, aims to halt the printing of ballot papers and the issuance of a notice of poll for the Amenfi Central constituency in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections.

The legal action follows Joana Gyan Cudjoe’s disqualification by the EC, which was based on a prior order from the High Court in Sekondi. The court had imposed an injunction on her candidacy pending the resolution of an ongoing legal dispute. The injunction, issued on 31 May 2024, was the result of a suit filed by Gyedu Frimpong and four others, challenging her eligibility to run in the upcoming elections.

The plaintiffs argue that the legal matter must be fully resolved before any further steps in the election process can be taken in the Amenfi Central constituency. The injunction is designed to prevent the EC from moving forward with election preparations in the area until the court rules on the substantive issue.

In their motion, Joana Gyan Cudjoe and the NDC request that the court bar the EC from any actions related to the election process, including printing ballots and releasing the notice of poll, until all legal matters are addressed.

The case is scheduled to be heard on 24 October 2024, and its outcome could have a significant impact on the electoral process in Amenfi Central as the 2024 elections approach. The decision may determine whether the NDC will have a candidate on the ballot or if the ongoing legal challenges will further complicate the constituency’s electoral landscape.
