Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed his support for the decision made by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to declare four parliamentary seats vacant. The move, which has sparked political tension, is seen by Mahama as a significant development, particularly for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking during a campaign event in Kpone Katamanso, within the Greater Accra region, Mahama indicated that this decision could shift the balance of power in Parliament, potentially giving the NDC the majority. He welcomed this as a promising sign for the party’s future prospects.
“If the reports I’m hearing are accurate, then something historic is happening. The Speaker has declared four seats vacant, meaning the Majority has become the Minority, and the Minority has now become the Majority. Without casting a single ballot, the NDC has gained the majority,” Mahama stated.
Mahama, who is actively campaigning ahead of the December 2024 elections, sees this shift in parliamentary dynamics as a positive omen for the NDC. The declaration of the four seats vacant follows a motion arguing that the MPs, who intend to contest as independent candidates, had forfeited their party affiliations, leading to their loss of parliamentary membership.
