Reject NDC Candidate’s Forms Over Forgery – Petitioner Appeals To EC

A resident of Amenfi Central, Gyedu Frimpong, has formally petitioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to reject the nomination forms of Joana Cudjoe Gyan, citing a legal injunction issued by the Takoradi High Court that restrains the EC from accepting her nomination.

In the petition, Gyedu Frimpong argues that accepting Mrs. Gyan’s forms would constitute contempt of court, as an injunction is currently in place through Suit Number E112/36/24 Gyedu Frimpong and 4 others v. Joana Cudjoe Gyan and 2 others. The suit challenges Mrs. Gyan’s eligibility following her victory in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Amenfi Central Constituency.

A key issue raised in the petition concerns the legitimacy of Mrs. Gyan’s voters identification card, which is a necessary document for participation in the primaries. According to the petition, Mrs. Gyan submitted a voters ID containing 11 digits, while the standard voter ID in Ghana consists of 10 digits as mandated by the Public Election Regulations. Additionally, the petition claims that Mrs. Gyan presented two different voter ID numbers—67610125841 and 67610125891—further alleging that one of the numbers belongs to another individual, Seidu Bala.

Supporting documents from the Amenfi and Bantama constituencies of the NDC are attached to the petition, purportedly confirming that Mrs. Gyan forged her voter ID number in order to participate in the primaries. The petition accuses her of violating the law by forging an official document, which it argues is a criminal act.

The petition stresses the need for individuals who respect the rule of law to serve in public office, urging the EC to investigate and take action against Mrs. Gyan for allegedly committing fraud. Furthermore, it highlights an additional allegation that Mrs. Gyan backdated her NDC membership card to meet the four-year requirement for candidacy in the party’s primaries.

The petition concludes by urging the EC to act in accordance with the law and reject Mrs. Gyan’s nomination forms to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
